The idea
Two monologues from Men and Women, of eighteen fifty-five, speak for Renaissance painters. Fra Lippo Lippi, a lively monk, defends painting the real world. Andrea del Sarto, "The Faultless Painter," a timid master, admits, "a man's reach should exceed his grasp, / Or what's a heaven for?"
In practice
A realist monk; a faultless failure.
Where people slip
Both poems are about art.
