The idea
"Break, Break, Break," written in eighteen thirty-five, mourns Hallam beside the sea in Lincolnshire. "Crossing the Bar," of eighteen eighty-nine, compares death to crossing the sandbar out to the boundless deep; Tennyson asked that it be placed at the end of all editions of his poems.
In practice
The sea as grief; the sea as death.
