Lamb's Essays of Elia
Captions available
The idea
Charles Lamb's Essays of Elia appeared in the London Magazine from eighteen twenty and in book form in eighteen twenty-three. Written under the persona "Elia," in a personal, conversational tone, they established him as "the most delightful of English essayists."
In practice
A persona; a conversational voice.
Where people slip
Elia is a persona, not Lamb plain.
