English Literature / Unit 12   ENL 1108 short lesson, about 20 seconds

"The Lamb" and "The Tyger"

Captions available

The idea

In "The Lamb," from Innocence, a child asks, "Little Lamb who made thee," and answers that its maker is meek and mild. In "The Tyger," from Experience, the speaker asks what "immortal hand or eye" could "frame thy fearful symmetry," and "Did he who made the Lamb make thee?"

In practice

A gentle question; a terrifying one.

Where people slip

"The Tyger" asks questions it never answers.
