Metonymy and Synecdoche

Captions available

The idea

Metonymy names something by a thing associated with it, as "the crown" for a monarch or "sabre rattling" for threatening war. Synecdoche, a kind of metonymy, uses a part for the whole or the reverse, as in "lend me a hand."

In practice

Associated thing, or part for whole.

Where people slip

Every synecdoche is a metonymy, not the reverse.
