Educational Psychology / Unit 5 EDP 0435 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The 5E Model
The idea
The 5E model, from the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, sequences a constructivist lesson in five phases. Engage raises interest and surfaces what students already think. Explore gives hands-on experience with the phenomenon. Explain introduces terms and ideas after the experience, attaching names to what students have seen. Elaborate applies the idea to new situations. Evaluate checks understanding, and evaluation runs throughout the cycle rather than only at the end.
In practice
Worked example: students play with magnets and notice some things stick, then learn the term attracting force, then test which classroom objects are magnetic.
Where people slip
The common mistake is explaining before exploring. In the 5E order, terms come after experience, so the vocabulary attaches to something students have seen. Evaluation is continuous and cyclical, so a lesson may loop back to exploration when understanding is thin.
