The idea
Metacognition is knowing and regulating one's own thinking, and it underlies critical thinking: analyzing arguments, judging sources and deciding what to believe.
In practice
A student notices she does not understand a paragraph and rereads it slowly.
Where people slip
Inductive reasoning moves from cases to a general rule and deductive reasoning from a rule to cases; neither is the same as bottom-up processing.
