Generalization and Discrimination
Captions available
The idea
Generalization spreads a learned behavior to similar situations, and discrimination is learning when a behavior will not be reinforced, responding only to the right cue.
In practice
Raising a hand in math spreads to science; a student learns not to call out during tests.
Where people slip
A cue that signals when reinforcement is available, such as being called on, is a discriminative stimulus.
