Achievement, Aptitude and Diagnostic Tests

Captions available

The idea

Achievement tests measure what has been learned; diagnostic tests pinpoint specific strengths and weaknesses, such as word recognition, comprehension and fluency in reading; aptitude tests predict general achievement from verbal, quantitative and problem-solving skills.

In practice

A reading diagnostic shows fluent decoding but weak comprehension.

Where people slip

Intelligence tests are now often called cognitive ability tests, stressing developed rather than innate ability.
