Electron Affinity Trend

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

Electron affinity is the energy change when a gaseous atom gains an electron, growing more negative across a period as Zeff increases.

Show

A halogen's high Zeff attracts an added electron strongly, releasing energy and giving a strongly negative affinity.

Watch for

A more negative electron affinity means a stronger pull on the electron, not a measure of reluctance to accept one.
