Atomic Number

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

The atomic number is the number of protons in an atom's nucleus, and it alone defines which element the atom is.

Show

Any atom with six protons is carbon, atomic number 6, no matter how many neutrons or electrons that particular atom happens to have.

Watch for

Neutron count never sets identity; atoms with the same protons but different neutrons are still the same element.
