Oxidation and Reduction Defined by Electron Transfer

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

Oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is the gain of electrons, and the two always occur together in one reaction.

Show

Zinc metal reacting with copper ions, Zn + Cu²⁺ → Zn²⁺ + Cu, loses electrons from zinc while copper ions gain them.

Watch for

"Oxidation" without "reduction" happening somewhere in the same reaction describes an impossible half of a process.
