The Unit Cell

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

A unit cell is the smallest repeating structural unit whose repetition in three dimensions generates an entire crystal lattice.

Show

Stacking one cubic unit cell of a metal repeatedly in every direction reconstructs the metal's whole crystal structure.

Watch for

A unit cell's corner and edge particles are shared with neighbors — the count belonging to one cell is a fraction of what's drawn.
