Adaptation
Captions available
The idea
Adaptation is a trait that fits an organism to its environment, produced over generations by natural selection.
In practice
A heat-tolerant microbe living in a hot spring and a moth with a tongue matched to one flower's depth are both adaptations.
Where people slip
An adaptation fits a past and present environment; it carries no guarantee of fitting a future one.
