The idea
Resource partitioning is the differentiation of niches, in space, time, or resource type, allowing similar competing species to coexist by reducing the overlap competitive exclusion otherwise penalizes.
In practice
Several warbler species feeding in different vertical zones of the same tree partition its insect resources by location.
Where people slip
Resource partitioning reduces competitive overlap — it does not eliminate the underlying competition.
