The idea
Sensation is a receptor's activation by a stimulus; perception is the brain's interpretation of that activation into a conscious experience, occurring at higher levels, not at the receptor.
In practice
Two people with the same dental injury can perceive its pain differently.
Where people slip
Assuming identical receptor input guarantees identical experience is the error — perception varies between people given the same stimulus.
