The idea
Abscisic acid accumulates under stress such as drought or cold, inducing seed and bud dormancy and promoting stomatal closure to conserve water.
In practice
Low soil moisture raises abscisic acid levels, closing stomata and reducing the water loss transpiration would otherwise cause.
Where people slip
Abscisic acid's breakdown over winter, not a fixed timer, is what releases a seed from dormancy once conditions turn favorable.
