The idea
A triglyceride is a lipid formed when three fatty acid chains bond to a glycerol backbone through dehydration synthesis.
In practice
Body fat stored under skin is mostly triglycerides, a dense, stable form for storing energy over the long term.
Where people slip
A triglyceride's glycerol backbone is small and shared; almost all of the molecule's size comes from its three attached fatty acid chains.
