Gene expression is regulated at several levels, including epigenetic, transcriptional, post-transcriptional, translational, and post-translational control.

A cell can silence a gene by packaging its DNA tightly, blocking transcription, degrading its mRNA, blocking translation, or degrading the finished protein.
