The idea
A deep network is a stack of layers, each re-describing the case for the next — "deep" means nothing more than how many stages the case passes through.
In practice
Raw pixels admit no single cat-versus-dog cut; layers manufacture, cut by cut, coordinates in which the distinction nearly is one.
Where people slip
Nobody designs the intermediate coordinates — training sculpts them, as errors sculpted the melon knobs.
