Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 9 AIL 0832 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Read the Movement, Not the Label
Captions available
The idea
Knowing a poem is a Shakespearean sonnet does not tell you where it turns or whether it turns. The label gives the rhyme and the line count. The movement has to be read, which is why the marker-hunting procedure matters more than the classification.
In practice
The label gives less than it seems.
Where people slip
Classification is not structure.
