Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 9   AIL 0822 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Sonnet Seventy-Three: A Different Shape

Captions available

The idea

This poem has no single turn. Its three quatrains each offer a separate image for the same thing, and the couplet draws a consequence. Where Sonnet twenty-nine pivots, this one accumulates, which is the second structural pattern the exam uses.

In practice

Accumulation, not pivot.

Where people slip

Not every sonnet has a volta.
