Metonymy

Captions available

The idea

The glossary defines metonymy as a form of metaphor in which a phrase is understood to represent something more, giving sabre rattling to mean threatening war. The substituted term is associated with the thing rather than resembling it, and that is what separates it from metaphor proper.

In practice

Association, not resemblance.

Where people slip

Related to the thing, not like it.
