"Sensible Writers" in Fielding

Captions available

The idea

Fielding says such lives are most agreeable and instructive when delivered to us by sensible writers. Sensible means judicious or perceptive, not emotionally responsive. The glossary has no entry for it, and the modern sense would make the phrase mean something Fielding did not write.

In practice

Sensible is judicious here.
