Swift's Opening: The Manner

Captions available

The idea

A Modest Proposal opens by calling it a melancholy object to walk through the town and see the roads and cabin doors crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four or six children, all in rags. The manner is orderly, even statistical.

In practice

Orderly, counting, unhurried.

Where people slip

Note the counting of the children.
