Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 20   AIL 1913 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Three Translators, Three Decisions

Captions available

The idea

Pope imposed a form the original did not have. Longfellow kept a shape and dropped its sound. Tagore changed genre entirely. Those three exhaust most of what a translator can do, and naming which one a passage shows is the band's characteristic question.

In practice

Impose, partly keep, or change genre.

Where people slip

Three decisions, three cases.
