Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 20   AIL 1907 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Terza Rima Without the Rhyme

Captions available

The idea

Unit eight defined terza rima: three-line stanzas rhyming A B A, B C B, C D C, each handing a rhyme to the next. Longfellow keeps the three-line stanzas and drops the rhyme entirely. Life, dark and lost do not rhyme, and the interlocking is gone.

In practice

The tercets kept, the rhyme dropped.

Where people slip

The interlocking is gone.
