Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 19 AIL 1850 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Trap: Assuming the Modern Is Familiar
Captions available
The idea
A century-old passage can feel contemporary and still use words and references that have moved. Nineteen twenties slang is as opaque as Elizabethan usage to a reader who assumes it is current. Familiarity of surface invites less checking, and that is the risk.
In practice
Familiar surface, less checking.
Where people slip
Opaque in a different way.
