Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 17   AIL 1652 short lesson, about 20 seconds

When the Markers Are Absent

Captions available

The idea

Modernised editions remove thou and regularise the verb endings, so their absence proves nothing at all about a passage's age. Fall back on the other markers instead: inverted syntax, dense figures, and an argued structure. Never conclude a date from a single feature.

In practice

Absence proves nothing.

Where people slip

Modernising removes the markers.
