Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 17   AIL 1638 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Trap: Milton Read at Speed

The idea

His sentences are long enough that a reader can reach the end of a passage without having located a main verb. The sense then assembles from fragments and is usually wrong. Slow down and parse, which costs less time than answering from a misreading.

In practice

Parse it; do not skim it.

Where people slip

Skimming assembles a wrong sense.
