Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 2   AIL 0131 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Open Conditions

The idea

Not every if is contrary to fact. If it rains, we stay in leaves the rain genuinely possible, and takes the indicative rather than were. Distinguishing an open condition from a false one decides which restatement of a line is faithful.

In practice

If it rains, not if it were.

Where people slip

Only some conditions take were.
