Analyzing and Interpreting Literature / Unit 12 AIL 1124 short lesson, about 20 seconds
The Syllogism
Captions available
The idea
A syllogism reasons from two premises to a conclusion: all of one thing is another, this is one thing, therefore it is the other. The glossary has no headword. Most arguments in prose leave a premise unstated, and finding the unstated one is often where an inference question is going.
In practice
Two premises, one conclusion.
Where people slip
The unstated premise is the target.
