Syntax: The Sentence Inside the Lines
Captions available
The idea
Syntax is the order of words in the sentence, and poems bend it. Inverted order, delayed verbs and long suspended clauses slow a reader and put weight where the poet wants it. Finding the plain sentence inside a difficult stanza is the first move of any close reading.
In practice
Find the sentence before you judge the poem.
Where people slip
Difficulty is often syntax, not meaning.
