The idea

Susanna Rowson's Charlotte Temple, published in seventeen ninety-one, follows a schoolgirl persuaded to elope to America, abandoned there, and left to die after childbirth. It was among the most widely read novels in the early republic, and the board takes a sample passage from its opening pages.

In practice

The early republic's bestseller.

Where people slip

Rowson rests on the survey witness and the novel itself.
