The idea

Bradstreet's best-known poem, printed in sixteen seventy-eight, opens by declaring that if ever two were one, then surely they. It values the marriage above whole mines of gold and the riches of the East, and ends by asking that they persevere so that they may live ever.

In practice

A wife's poem, in a wary faith.

Where people slip

Earthly love had to square with heaven.
