Native Voices in an Archive Kept by Others

The idea
Almost every Native text on this exam was written down by a colonist, a missionary or a folklorist, often centuries after it was first spoken, and sometimes translated twice. Occom and Pontiac reach us in English and French records. The course names the recorder whenever it names the text.
In practice
Transcribed, translated, and kept by strangers.
Where people slip
The recorder is part of the text.
