"How the World Was Made": The Cherokee Account
Captions available
The idea
The Cherokee story hangs the earth, a floating island, from a sky of solid rock by four cords that will break when the world grows old. The animals lived crowded above until Water Beetle dived and brought up soft mud, which spread into the island.
In practice
Four cords, a rock sky, fetched mud.
Where people slip
The story ends in prophecy, not in comfort.
