The idea
Erdrich is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and sets most of her work in the North Dakota lands of her ancestors. Love Medicine, of nineteen eighty-four, is the only debut novel to win the National Book Critics Circle Award, and it grew into a tetralogy.
In practice
One reservation, four interlinked novels.
Where people slip
The anchor compares it to Faulkner's county.
