The idea
Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in nineteen fifty for Annie Allen, becoming the first African American to receive it. She later left Harper and Row to publish with Dudley Randall's Broadside Press, and served as Poet Laureate of Illinois from nineteen sixty-eight.
