American Literature / Unit 12 AML 1132 short lesson, about 20 seconds
"Miniver Cheevy" and "Mr. Flood's Party"
Captions available
The idea
Miniver Cheevy, born too late, loves the medieval past, scorns the present, and keeps on drinking. Eben Flood drinks alone on a hill above a town where no one is left who knew him, toasting himself in two voices. Both are comic and both are not.
In practice
A man born too late; a man drinking alone.
Where people slip
The comedy carries the pity, and reverses.
