American Literature / Unit 12   AML 1123 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Double Consciousness and the Veil

Captions available

The idea

Du Bois describes a sense of always looking at oneself through the eyes of others, a twoness of being both American and Black in one dark body, and pictures the colour line as a veil through which each side sees the other imperfectly. The terms became permanent.

In practice

Two souls, and a veil between.

Where people slip

The phrase describes a condition, not an opinion.
