The idea

A young American woman in Europe behaves as she would at home, walking out with men unchaperoned, and the expatriate community reads her freedom as vulgarity. She dies of Roman fever after a night at the Colosseum, and the narrator Winterbourne understands too late what she was.

In practice

A girl misread to death.

Where people slip

The story is told by the man who misjudges her.
