ACT Preparation / Unit 9 ACT 0833 short lesson, about 20 seconds
A Line Meets a Curve
Captions available
The idea
A line can meet a parabola or a circle in zero, one or two points. Substituting the line into the curve's equation gives a quadratic, whose solutions count the intersections.
In practice
y = x and y = x² meet where x² = x: at (0, 0) and (1, 1).
Where people slip
Find both coordinates: each x found gives its own point.
