The idea
A vector has magnitude and direction and can be written by its components, ⟨a, b⟩. Vectors add component by component, a scalar multiplies each component, and the magnitude is √(a² + b²).
In practice
⟨3, 4⟩ + ⟨1, −2⟩ = ⟨4, 2⟩; 2⟨3, 4⟩ = ⟨6, 8⟩; the magnitude of ⟨3, 4⟩ is 5.
Where people slip
Magnitude is a length, never negative.
