ACT Preparation / Unit 6 ACT 0505 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Addition, Similarity and Contrast
Captions available
The idea
Addition transitions, such as also, furthermore and in addition, add a point. Similarity transitions, such as likewise and similarly, show likeness. Contrast transitions, such as however, yet and on the other hand, turn against what came before.
In practice
"The plan is cheap. Furthermore, it is fast. However, it is untested."
Where people slip
Addition and contrast are opposites in logic, so swapping them reverses the meaning.
