ACT Preparation / Unit 1 ACT 0024 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Repairing a Dangling Opener
The idea
A dangling opener has two repairs, and both put the missing doer into the sentence. Step one: ask who performs the action in the opening phrase. Step two, the first repair: make that doer the subject right after the comma, rewording the main clause around it. Step two, the second repair: turn the opening phrase into a clause with its own subject, so the doer is named inside it. Either repair is correct; choose the one that changes the least.
In practice
Worked example: "Finishing the exam early, the room felt very quiet." Who finished? A student, never named. First repair: "Finishing the exam early, Priya noticed how quiet the room felt." Second repair: "When Priya finished the exam early, the room felt very quiet."
Where people slip
Moving the phrase does not fix a dangler. "The room felt very quiet, finishing the exam early" still has no one finishing the exam. The doer has to be added, not relocated. Single source, Writing for Success.
