ACT Preparation / Unit 20 ACT 1925 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Predicting Another Trial
The idea
A prediction about a new trial is made in three steps. First, find the trend in the results as the independent variable changes. Second, place the new trial's condition within or beyond the tested range. Third, predict the result from the trend, interpolating within the range or extending cautiously beyond it, and choose the answer that falls where the trend points.
In practice
Worked example: in the invented ramp study on wood, 20 degrees gave 1.2 meters and 30 degrees gave 1.8 meters. A trial at 25 degrees, halfway between, should give about 1.5 meters. A choice of 2.0 meters would exceed the result at 30 degrees and break the trend.
Where people slip
Check a prediction against both neighbors; a new result should not leap past a measured one in the wrong direction.
