ACT Preparation / Unit 16 ACT 1513 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Too Broad, Too Narrow
Captions available
The idea
A main-idea choice can fail by being too broad, covering more than the passage discusses, or too narrow, covering one detail. The right choice fits the whole passage.
In practice
For a passage on one bakery, "Food matters to people" is too broad; "the bakery opens at five" is too narrow.
Where people slip
A true detail is still the wrong main idea.
