ACT Preparation / Unit 16 ACT 1507 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Inference: Supported, Not Stated
Captions available
The idea
An inference is a conclusion the passage supports without stating it. The right inference needs no outside knowledge and goes no further than the evidence.
In practice
If a character packs a raincoat and checks the sky twice, the passage supports that she expects rain, not that she hates rain.
Where people slip
The most interesting conclusion is not the most supported one.
