ACT Preparation / Unit 14   ACT 1317 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Parabola, Ellipse and Hyperbola

Captions available

The idea

In standard form, an ellipse is x²/a² + y²/b² = 1, a hyperbola x²/a² − y²/b² = 1, and a parabola has one squared variable.

In practice

x²/9 + y²/4 = 1 is an ellipse; x² − y² = 1 is a hyperbola; y = x² − 3 is a parabola.

Where people slip

The sign between the squares decides.
